About

Shogo Amo is a queer Japanese theatre-maker, director and actor based in London. Their work explores queer identity, working-class lives and international cross-cultural storytelling, creating emotionally nuanced productions that balance theatricality with social insight.

As co-producer and director, Shogo brought Beauty and the Beast by Japan’s pioneering LGBTQ+ theatre company Flying Stage to UK audiences through productions at Underbelly Boulevard Soho and the Hope Theatre. The production received a four-star review from A Young(ish) Perspective.

Shogo trained through New Earth Theatre’s Performers Academy Plus and Make Theatre With Foreign Affairs, and completed the Evening Directing Course at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. They were also awarded a scholarship to attend the British American Drama Academy (BADA) London Theatre Programme as a director.

In Japan, Shogo worked as assistant choreographer for Sound Horizon and created Actors Comic, an innovative project combining live performance with manga that was supported by the Japan Performing Arts Fund. In 2023, they directed and produced the original two-person musical NOW LOADING, which received critical praise and recognition in Japan’s Emerging Directors Competition.

Across both directing and performance, Shogo is recognised for rigorous research, collaborative rehearsal processes and an empathetic approach that centres queer and underrepresented voices.
